Obituary. Ben. F. Berry. By J.B. Weaver. Benjamin F. Berry, one of Winston’s most illustrious sons was born a few miles west of here in this county, in 1866, and died on the 20 of March 1907 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was brought home on the 21st and on the 22nd was interred in the cemetery at Union Grove near his old home. The Undertaker wrote on his coffin: “Cause of death; cancer of the liver.” B.F. Berry farmed till he was about 20 years of age. Then we see him, for three consecutive years, in the Godfrey and Double Springs High Schools. Next we find him teaching in the public schools, a member of the mercantile firm “Dodd and Berry,” at Delmar, Ala., a Commission Merchant in Memphis, during which time he studied law at night, then we see him leading his class in the Law School at Lebanon, Tennessee graduating in 1897 at the head of his class. After his graduation took up the practice of law in the city of Memphis, where he soon distinguished himself in his profession, securing the appointment as District Attorney, which position he held with credit two terms. He then became a member of the law firm “Berry & Robert” with whom he remained until about two years ago, when he was forced from ill health, to go to Los Angeles, Cal., where he remained till about two weeks before he died. All realize that his life was not in vain. The bereaved have our sympathies. [B.F. Berry, son of R.A. Berry, 30 Dec 1865 – 20 Mar 1907; buried Union Grove Cemetery]
