Mr. Charley L. Haley 78 died on Tuesday, March 20 at 6:00 at the home in Florence after a lingering illness. The Funeral was conducted at the Browns funeral home in Florence by the Rev. Gaynor Pastor of the Church of Christ in Florence of which Mr. Haley was a member.

The funeral procession halted and the remains lay in state for thirty minutes at the Church of Christ in Haleyville. Interment was made in the old family cemetery at the White House, about twelve miles south of Haleyville.

All his children were with him when he passed away. His survivors are the widow Mrs. Charley Haley of Florence. Five sons, Authur, and Charles Jr. of Florence. Emmett of Collins Mississippi, Jim of Nashville, Tennessee and Joe of New York City. Three daughters, Mrs. Clarence Gravlee of Mt. Dora Florida, Mrs. Pinkney Curtis of Florence and Mrs. Ruth Haley of New York City and brothers W. W. Haley and Mat Haley of Haleyville and one sister Mrs. Susan Tidwell of Haleyville.

Mr. Charley Haley with his brothers W. W. and John moved to Haleyville from Thorn Hill Community about 1887. At that time Bud Roden had a store about where the Parkway is now by the N. A. Railroad. When the railroad was built in 1885 this stop was called Davis Crossing. Mr. Davis built a store where the old Dodd wholesale building now stands and when the Community got large enough to incorporate Mr. Haley gave Mr. Davis a suit of clothes to allow him to have the town incorporated as Haleyville. The corporation limit was a circle one-quarter mile in all directions from the center of Haley's store.

Old Uncle Sam Snoddy who now lives near Double Springs was at that time carrying mail from Houston which was the county seat of Winston to Allen's Factory down to Bear Creek. On this route he had been serving a station called Ark, Alabama out near the old Pickard Mill Road. He got his instructions to discontinue this stop and carry mail to the new post office which was in the corner of Haley's store. This Mr. Snoddy became the first Mail-carrier to bring mail to Haleyville and Charley Haley was the first postmaster of Haleyville. Mr. Charley Haley was the first prominent merchant and the Haley brothers Charley, Walker and John also established the first bank in Winston County which was the Traders and Farmers Bank and is still in operation. Mr. Charley Haley sold his interest in Haleyville and moved to Florence in 1906. Mr. John Haley died about twenty years ago and with the passing of Mr. Charley Haley only W. W. Haley is left of the Bros, who are really responsible for our thriving little city.
