Judge Curtis, 82, Dies on Tuesday, Was Winston's Probate Judge from 1904 Until 1922; Rites Wednesday

Judge John S. curtis, Winston county's Probate Judge from 1904 to 1922, died Tuesday at his home in Double Springs. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Curtis was born on Jan. 18, 1862, at Ashridge, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Eliza Taylor Curtis and grandson of Solomon Curtis, who moved from Mississippi to Alabama in 1854.

He was elected circuit clerk in 1886, in which office he served until 1898. He was in business for several years in Haleyville before being elected probate judge in 1904 and serving until 1922. He was also a Justice of the Peace for a number of years.

Although advanced in years, his memory remained excellent and he continued working by abstracting deeds. He could remember, without consulting records, details of thousands of property transfers.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Carrie Curtis of Double Springs; six daughters, Mrs. W. C. Huckaby and Mrs. Daisy Arnold of Jacksonville Fla; Mrs. Ada McDaniel, Mrs. Lucy Pattie and Miss Hazel Curtis of Double Springs; and Mrs. Tom Blackwell of Memphis, Tenn.; Three sons Floyd Curtis Montgomery; Fred Curtis Haleyville, and Capt. Jack Curtis U. S. Army, New York City.
