Johnson King

On this 18th day of November in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and fifty, personally came before me a justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid Johnson King, aged seventy three years a resident of Hancock County and state aforesaid who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Johnson King who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Hugh Brown in the regiment of Kentucky volunteers horsemen commanded by Brigadier General Hopkins in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812, that he volunteered in Allen or Barren County in the State of Kentucky on or about the 1st day of October A.D. 1812 for an indefinite term and continued in actual service in said war for the term of between one and two months and was honorable discharged at Shaker Town in the State of Indiana on or about the 15th day of November A.D. 1812 as will appear by the muster rolls of said company and that he has never received county land for such service. He further declares that he has never received a certificate of discharge not having applied for one from his officer. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the county land to which he may be entitled under the act granting county land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States passed by Congress the 28th September 1850. He further states that he cannot recollect if there was a colonel commanding his regiment, but thinks that one Colonel or Major Adair was in command of it.

Sworn to and subscribed before me, the day and year above written and I certify hereby that I believe the said Johnson King to be the identical who served as aforesaid and that he is of the age aforesaid.

If the officer will examine he will find the absence of the public seal accounted for in the certificate within. Hancock is a new county and poor not get furnished with a public seal, as may be known by reference to Hon. George Houston and William R. Smith Ms Congress from this state.

Blackwell, Judge of the Probate Court of the County of Hancock do hereby certify that Elijah Harman is an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the said county and full faith and credit is to be given to all his official acts as such and the above is his signature. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and of there being no seal of my office within my county have set my private seal as I ___ ________ by law to do on the nineteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty and of American Independence the seventy fifth year.

In answer to your inquiry I state that I am acquainted with Judge Blackwell who gave the above certificate. I have no doubt of the above being his hand writing tho I do not know his hand writing personally. My understanding is the Judge of the Court as above designated. I have no doubt of the fact. I also know the parties to the above transaction & they are reputable reliable men.

On the 16 of June 1855 before me a justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid personally appeared Johnson King aged 76 years who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Johnson King who was a soldier in the company commanded by Captain Hugh Brown that he volunteered in Barren County in the State of Kentucky on or about the first of September 1812 and was honorable discharged. He further states that he has received for said service county land warrant containing 40 acres issued under the act of 1851 by reason of said service which he has sence legally ___pased of and cannot now return he makes this declaration for the purpose of claiming additional county land to which he is entitled to under the act of March the 3rd 1855 never having received county land except as above stated.

Sworn to subscribed and acknowledged before the day and year above written and the same day personally came before me Josiah Commens and John Little, residents of Hancock County to me known as credible witnesses who being sworn according to law declares that they are personally acquainted with the said Johnson King who has made and subscribed the foregoing declaration that they was present and saw him sign his name to said declaration that from there personal acquaintance with him they believe that he is the identical person who performed the military services herein named and who has received a warrant therefore and they further swore that they are disinterested in this clame.

DeGraffenreid, Judge of Probate Court in and for the county and state above named, do hereby certify that George Hooker Esqr., before whom the foregoing affidavits were made, and who has thereunto signed his name was at the time of so doing a justice of the peace in and for the county and state above named, duly commissioned and sworn that all this affidavit acts as such are entitled to full faith and credit, and that his signature thereto is genuine. In testimony thereof, I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my private seal there being no seal of office, this the 16th of June 1855.
