The Winston County Genealogical Society met at the Double Springs Community Center.

  1. Minutes:

    1. Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

None

III. Old Business:

    1. Jim Mayhall called Treva concerning the Johnson Cemeteries. A meeting was set, which decided on the following: there will be limited motorized access in May, unless someone comes from out of state; also, bush hogs and chainsaws are allowed to clear the road.
    2. The archives building has been painted and wainscoting added, confirmed by Treva who took a quick peek inside the building this afternoon.
    3. The cleaning of the Old Lovett Cemetery is slated for Saturday, August 4, 2007, meeting at 12:30 at Union Grove Cemetery. Bring tools.

IV. New Business/Upcoming Events:

    1. Liz Elrod would like to have the Freeman Cemetery cleaned. P.J. will contact her about letting her relatives know that we will set a date to do this in the fall.
    2. P.J. made a CD of newsletters. Darryal can make copies, and $7.50 plus shipping was decided on as the selling price. P.J. can advertise this on the web site.
    3. Steve Turner, of the SCV, wants to put up a marker on John Winston.
    4. Chad Fell says Maxwell Bridge, a steel bridge near Helican, had illegal dumping on it, which was set on fire to try and burn it down. Could this be designated as an historic landmark, since it’s one of the oldest bridges of its kind?
    5. Barton Reunion is Saturday, July 21, at the Natural Bridge Park.
    6. Curtis Reunion is Saturday, July 28, at the Double Springs Community Center.
    7. Taylor Reunion is Sunday, August 5, at the Bernice Walker Building.

V. Program:

    1. Robin Sterling spoke to the society on events during the Civil War, along with news, notes, and tips on how to research your ancestor through old newspapers.
