The Winston County Genealogical Society met at the Winston County Archives in Double Springs.

I. Minutes:

A. Minutes from the last meeting were read. Ronald Jackson made a motion to

accept the minutes as read; Faye Ellenburg seconded and the motion carried.

II. Treasurer’s Report (As of February 29, 2012):

A. Checking - $4,249.37

III. Petty Cash Report:

A. No petty cash

IV. Old Business:

A. Trevia explained Dekalb book received cheaper then we thought as it was on sale

B. Trevia also explained that the old copier needed to have something done with it, It was suggested that we donate to a area Church that has a need.

C. It was announced that Robin Millwood a client has been volunteering for find a grave and has taken several pictures of tombs located through out the cemeteries of Winston County and has brought the thumb drive in Archives for us to download on the computer.

D. Dianne the trip for arrowheads is called off as the owners aren’t going to turn the ground.

E. Tracie Lauderdale bought in family puzzlers, Georgia and Tennessee. Lots of information has been made available for us to utilize.

F. Margaret Ward called and talked to Dianne and Trevia about Billie Fortenberry’s collection of newspapers. Billie was an unofficial historian of Haleyville. She kept everything, all the cards, clippings everything. She also kept pictures of buildings, houses everything. The archives may receive even more information from her.

V. New Business:

A. Dianne mentioned that the Haleyville historical society had their murder mystery. They had good turn out. JD Snoddy suggested that the cast do a performance at Lakeshore Inn benefiting the archives. Not sure of a date yet.

B. PJ mentioned that our blue book is not copywriter and do we need to? Darryal suggested not at this time. But there may come a time when we need to.

C. PJ brought to everyone’s attention the 1940’s census will be available 2 April 2012. Asking for volunteers to index all 11 precincts. So far just have a couple of volunteers--- Sharon Spangler - DelMar, PJ- Lynn, Ronald and Cindy said they would help anywhere needed.

VI. Kenneth Ward presented the program on the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama. in bring in his artifacts he transformed us back in time. As explained piece after piece to us, you could picture the use of the arrowheads, the spears, the bow drills. As he explained the bow drill was used to put holes in things There was 26 bluff shelters covered up when bear creek was formed. The people did good to live past 35 years old. That now a days we need to be careful because people are creating arrowheads and pottery using aging techniques to give the appearance of age and authenticity. Mr. Ward transported to another place and time. We are hoping he will come back and continue the journey.
