The Winston County Genealogical Society met at Winston County Archives in Double Springs.

  1. Minutes:
    1. Minutes from the last meeting were read. Pat Owsley made motion to accept the minutes as read PJ Gossett seconded; the motion carried.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

    1. Checking $2,628.00+230.00+200.00+285.00-23.52-270.00-40.00-98.21=$2,911.27
    2. No Petty Cash Report

III. Old Business:

    1. Trevia explained the situation with the microfilm and the grant money, also that we will match funds for the digitizing of the marriage books. That hopefully we’ll have done all we need to for us to finally receive the grant money.
    2. Trevia also explained about the historical artifacts that Rick Harris brought in that had been found at the Houston Jail. She also explained how Chad Fell had taken pictures of the items and had written an article and that the article had already came out in the paper, in color.
    3. March 30 @ 2:00pm dedication of the Dick Payne bust at the Houston Jail. Steve Turner is asking everyone that wants to and can to come. Also, that the Sons of The Confederate Veterans are going to be meeting to discuss possibly having a bust of Willis Farris made. They will be meeting March 20th at 6:00pm. Modern Woodman will be making a donation. Willis Farris was the first sheriff of Hancock County.

IV. New Business:

    1. PJ has brought in one of the proof copies of his book "From the Pages of Time, History of Lynn Alabama" Volume 1. The cost will be approximately $30.00; it is going to be an asset to anyone’s library.
    2. 1998 January through September there are no minutes. August will be our 200th meeting; we need to find out for sure so that we can start to make celebratory plans.
    3. Marriage book 1887-1930 is completed for Marion County. Ronald Jackson suggested that it would be a good idea to do part of Mississippi because of all the Winston connections.
    4. It was asked of Jerry Lovett to find out who donated the land for Henryfield Church.
    5. The Newsletter is out and ready to be mailed, there are several good articles concerning Jenny Johnson, Falls City and Williams Hotel at Double Springs. As always PJ has done an excellent job.

V. Program:

A. For the program Trevia and Dianne chose a couple of articles that they had found is going to be in their book. Trevia’s was on "1st Alabama Calvery Reunion – 1895 @ Lynn, Al, Grand Reunion of Federal Soldiers". Dianne’s was on Uncle Lewis Crumpton March 27, 1951 his beard being 43 inches long. When he was a child he heard the cannons firing on Atlanta during the Civil War.
