The Winston County Genealogical Society met at the Winston County Archives in Double Springs.

I. Minutes:

    1. Minutes from the last meeting were read by Dianne Miller. An error was noted in the beginning balance of the treasurer’s report on the April minutes. P.J. will correct this. Otherwise, Jerry made a motion to accept the minutes as read; Carolyn seconded and the motion carried.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

    1. Beginning Balance: $4328.37
    2. Checks: $76.30 for newsletter printing & $120 to Robin Sterling
    3. Ending Balance: $3,832.07

III. Petty Cash Report (1/22/2014 – 5/19/2014):

    1. Beginning Balance: $151.51
    2. Copies: $52.50
    3. Expenses: $106.60 (mailings and donation to purchase computer for archives)
    4. Ending Balance: $97.41

IV. Old Business:

A. Syscon has finished digitizing marriage books 3 and 4, and the DVDs have been given to the probate judge and the archives. Syscon also stated that they have master copies. We have not received an invoice for our part on matching the grant.

B. P.J.’s book on Lynn has been published and copies are available for $35.

C. The next meeting for the bust of Willis Farris will be June 2nd at the Galley Restaurant in Haleyville at 5:00 P.M. It will be a fundraising dinner. As of now, they have raised $7,050 towards the bust. They will also be meeting at Chef Troy’s Talk of the Town in Houston on June 24th.

V. New Business:

A. The owner of the Free State Barn has been working on the building.

B. A check for $28.16 has come in for book sales from Lulu.com. Dianne sold three Winston Roots books at the Tucker reunion.

C. The renewal subscriptions for both Ancestry.com and Fold3 is coming due. Ronald made a motion to renew, P.J. seconded, and the motion carried.

D. Joan White Crittenden has donated book series on the Civil War. Dolores Brooks also donated McKleroy and Guthrie books.

E. The society has a microfiche machine to donate. Treva will ask if Robin Sterling could use it.

F. P.J. and Treva asked the society if they would be interested in purchasing a digital voice recorder for the purpose of interviewing people for archiving and creating an audio library at the archives. It would be available for any society member to use for interviewing. Pat Owsley suggested we advertise in the newspaper asking for people to interview. She also suggested that the society buy two recorders, one to keep at the archives and the other for loaning out for interviewing. Treva found a suitable recorder at Walmart.com for about $59.99. Jerry Lovett made a motion to purchase two, Angela Barnett seconded, and the motion carried.

G. The Lovett/Thomas reunion is May 31, 11:00 A.M. at Henryfield Church. The Hood reunion is May 24 at 11:00 A.M. at Rocky Ravine Park in Haleyville, who will also meet May 22 to clean the Frost and Johnson Cemeteries.

VI. Program:

A. A listing of interview questions was read, followed by a group discussion of other questions we should ask and how we should conduct the interviews.
