The Winston County Genealogical Society met at the Winston County Archives in Double Springs.

I. Minutes:

    1. Minutes from the last meeting were read.
    2. Diane Allison made a motion to approve the minutes as read.
    3. Raven Millwood seconded and the motion carried.

II. Treasurer’s Report:

    1. Beginning Balance: $2,264.84
    2. Deposits: $482.40
    3. Checks: $333.80 - $62.40, Haleyville Library, heritage book purchase; $65.55, USPS, newsletter mailing; $105.00, Byars/Wright, dishonesty policy; $100.85, P.J., web site domain renewal
    4. Ending Balance: $2,413.44

III. Petty Cash (6/20/2016 – 10/18/2016):

    1. Beginning Balance: $103.62

IV. Old Business:

    1. Dianne, Treva, and P.J. went to the Marion County Genealogical Society on October 3rd and spoke about our group and the archives. Nine books were sold.
    2. Ronald, P.J., Raven, and Tim Mayhall met in Rabbittown today October 18th. The purpose was to plot out the newly discovered Old Hood Cemetery. Using dowsing rods, eight more possible graves were located in addition to the two that were already there. Afterwards, the seven additional graves were found at Shiloh Cemetery.

V. New Business:

    1. The web site has been renewed for five years at the cost of $100.85
    2. Recent donations include a Wadsworth Store sketch and two Addison High School yearbooks by Diane Allison; two genealogy standards books by Joan White Crittenden; Here We Rest, written by Clyde Bearden, and school atlas and medical book by Jerry Lovett; Alabama Senators and Alabama Past Leaders books by Dianne Miller. In addition Rick Harris brought in some filing cabinets donated from Wallace State. Charles Taylor has built some shelves for the archives, and Robin Sterling brought thirteen rolls of microfilm for donation to the Haleyville Library.

VI. Program:

    1. Randy Brown, President of the Marion County Genealogical Society, spoke to us about the Mexican American War fought from 1846 to 1848. He began with explanations of how the United States was formed through the westward expansion and progression and how disputed land was the cause. He also showed us the proper attire for soldiers at the time.
