Mary Sue McCullar Proctor, age 87, of Georgetown, Texas, formerly of Keysville, Virginia, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003.

She was born in Winston County on Sept. 13, 1915 to parents Noah and Lillie McCullar. During her lifetime she lived in several states, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, California and Virginia. She loved to travel and was always ready to explore new places. She was one of the groundbreaking women who worked in the shipyards during WWII. Whenever possible, she gave freely of her time and services to any family members who needed her, many times nursing the sick or comforting the bereaved, giving shelter to young people in the family and was always a champion of the underdog. Sue loved her family, the outdoors, everything in nature, gardening, crocheting, and working on her quilts.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Grubbs and her husband, George of Springville and Ellen Dutkiewicz and her husband, Russel of Georgetown, Texas; son, Kenneth McCullar and his wife, Martha of Keysville, Va.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who live in Alabama, Florida, Virginia, and California; two brothers, Eldred McCullar and his wife, Myrtle, of Jasper and R.M. McCullar and his wife, Ann of Butte, Montana; and sister, Faith Mathews of Jacksonville, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the Bennett Cemetery on Lamon Chapel Road in the Thach community.
