Dear Sybil,

This is the information that I have on Laban and Pleasant James. I would appreciate it if you would send me what you have. I am especially interested in any Bowman family connections to these people and any further connections to Tennessee.

Thank You,

Baron Smith

I have information on Pleasant and Laban James.

Laboan James, born in NC 1769, married Rebecca McBride in Grainger County, Tennessee in 1800. They had 6 sons and two daughters all in Lawrence County, Alabama. The sons were:
Isaac, b. 1806
Pleasant, b. 1809
William, b. 1811
Franklin, b. 1812
Jessey, b. 1813
and the youngest, LABORN GABRIEL JAMES, b. 1818, which would make him 52 years old in 1870 with a brother named Pleasant.

Pleasant is in my family line. Born in Lawrence County Alabama in 1809, he married Ann Cottingame in Lawrence County, Alabama on September 26th, 1826 and they had 17 children between 1828 and 1849. Pleasant went away to the Civil War with the 8th Infantry, Company K from Tennessee. He went to war with Louis M. Cason. Neither man returned home to his wife. Pleasant, however, married Cason's wife Adaline after the war. She had three children by Cason, then she had four children with Pleasant, one of which was named LABAN (b. 1829) They moved to Mills County, Texas after their children were born. Pleasant is buried at the Murphree Cemetary in Evant, Hamilton Co., Tx. and Adaline is buried in Regency Cem in Mills County Tx.

In the 1860 census, the first letter of her name looks like an S, but when compared to other names in the census, it is written the same as the L in Lee, for example. The census taker's S is entirely different from the L in Letilla's name.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the book "Mills County (Texas) memories" published in 1994, a person submitted the following about Pleasant. First wife Annie married in app. 1827. Had 17 children born between 1828 and 1849 in AL. Joined 8th inf, Co. K from Tenn. during Civil War. Went to war with Louis M. Cason. Neither man returned home to wife. BUT Pleasant married Cason's wife Adaline! She had three children by Cason, then she had four children with Pleasant. Their daughter Sarah married my husband's ggf. Pleasant is buried at the Murphree Cemetary in Evant, Hamilton Co. and Adaline is buried in Regency Cem in Mills County Tx. Descendants of Pleasant James say they were told he said he was related to Jesse James. The historical record shows that Jesse James visited Pleasant James in two different states. There is no known record proving the relationship and the Jesse James descendants have refused to allow a DNA test to clear it up.
