He was Sheriff of Winston County, and he died in 1918. They lived in Haleyville and were parents of five children. His father, Anderson Ward, is mentioned in Tories of the Hills. The father was one of the men who helped raid the jail in Jasper and free some Winston County people rounded up by the Home Guard, during the Civil War. He helped burn that jail, after helping the prisioners escape.
