ABBOT
I am looking for any information on the family of WILLIAM GAY listed on the 1860 census and again on the 1870 census. At that time he was living in the Houston area, and was listed as age 75, a farmer, born in NC. His wife, is listed as ELEA, age 61, born in SC. William was born about 1799 in North Carolina. His wife was EMILY LINDSAY born about 1810 in South Carolina. They had two sons, William R. (born about 1837) and Jonathan (born August, 1839), both born in Morgan Co., AL where the family is listed in the 1840 census. They then disappear from Alabama altogether during the 1850 census. I believe they may have gone back to North Carolina at that time to settle the estate of William's father whom I believe to be SOLOMAN GAY.I have been researching this family for about 10 years without much success. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your time, Lisa Kennard.***lisaok@bellsouth.net***

BIRD
Anyone know about the BIRDS in Winston County during the 1850 census? I'm particularly interested in John Bird (76, NC) and his wife, Catherine (64, NC). Living with them is Susan (10, TN). My gg-grandfather, Charles STOKES (son of William Henry STOKES), married Susan SMITH about 1861 in Winston Co., AL. One source I've found suggests that Susan's mother's maiden name was BYRD/BIRD. The Susan living with the Bird's is the right age and born in the right place. There's no other Susan (Smith or otherwise) that's the correct age in that census -- not that it means anything. Anyway, I'm wondering if perhaps Susan is their granddaughter and that just perhaps there's an error (GASP!!) and her surname is SMITH. This family is shown pretty near the STOKES family and other families (i.e. Lovette and Cagle) that migrated from Warren Co., TN. Did the BIRDs come from there as well??? Any information that anyone could give me on this family would be wonderful. Other BIRDs near John & Catherine are Benjamin (44, NC) & Mary (44, TN) and John (33, TN) & Nancy (31, TN). Many thanks in advance! Oh, I'll gladly share information on the STOKES with anyone interested. Delanie Alcorn-Jones ***delaniej@aol.com***

I have reason to believe that Celia's mother (above) is buried in this cemetery, too. But since I probably cannot find out for sure, I would like to know from the 1900 Alabama census whether or not Celia's mother was living with her and her husband James Blair in 1900. The mother's name was Priscilla E. SWORDS. She would have been about age 40 in 1900. Can someone look this up for me? If she is not found living with them, can someone find out if she is living alone? Can someone check a Winston County Cemetery book to see if she is listed as buried anywhere? I suspect she died around 1911. Since she died after her daughter, Priscilla may have moved in with someone else by 1910, if that census could be checked, too. Please help me. Thanks very much. His widow, Catherine (4/20/1806 to 7/24/1894) is buried in the Bonds Cemetery in Winston County.I am interested in documents and other data concerning the above and their children, especially those related through Alvin Webster Bonds, the eldest son of the above couple. BONDS
This is a reply to the above query on William Riley BONDS. The Email address was incorrect, so I am posting this here in the hope that it will reach the sender who listed their address as jdvine@ala.net. William Riley BONDS was my second greatgrandfather, through his son Thomas (5 yrs younger than Alvin Webster). There are a number of descendants of William Riley still in this area. I may have some information that would be helpful, and I also have some documents pertaining to Riley's service in the Army of Northern Virginia. I have nothing further back, other than his parents George Washington and Catherine. I do know that there is no record in Gwinnett County of GW's death or place of burial, only that he died in the 1850's. I have learned from the Gwinnett Historical Society that some descendants of Riley's siblings are still there. I also have list of these siblings. DENTON
I'm interested in any DENTONs from Winston Co. My husband's 2nd gt.grandfather was George Washington DENTON, originally from GA, then moved to DeKalb Co., AL. By the 1910 census, he and his wife, Sarah CARROLL DENTON, were living in Haleyville, Winston Co. with their son James Isaac DENTON. In 1920 George was living with the same son in Addison, Winston Co. and was listed as a widower. George died in 1925. I understand that he and Sarah, James Isaac, and John Michael are buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Upshaw, near Addison. I would like to find my husband's DENTON cousins, if there are still any in the area. James Isaac's sons were Blain, Clem, and Baxter. Daughters were Blanche, Virgie, and Edna. I do not have husband's names for them. I would be grateful for any information on this family. Barbara Dooley,Cullowhee,NC.

KEITH
I am searching for the grave of my grandfather, WILBURN BENTLY KEITH, who is reported to have died abt 1911 thru 1912 in Alabama. Some stories in the family, mostly UNVERIFIED...and PROBABLY untrue...say that Wilburn died in the Cordova/Slicklizzard area of WALKER County, but, 1910 census records show that he and his family lived in the BLACK POND area of WINSTON COUNTY. The census record shows him as BENT KEITH...and he may have gone by WIL, WILBURN, BENTLY and maybe even WILLIAM. His wife, JULIA and children moved to Porum, OK after his "DEATH".....(He could have just left the family...and moved on...) but Julia was known to have told some tales... and she mentioned he was a 32nd degree Mason, had a Mason's funeral...etc....but, OUR family has no records of any of this social activity and we know they were financially... "challenged." It is possible that he was a miner and may have died as a result of a mine disaster....and may have been buried in such an incident....we are hoping that maybe someone might have some records of any mine related deaths between 1910 and 1913.
