Tribute of Respect. Houston Lodge No. 365, A.F. & A.M.

Double Springs, Alabama, January 8, 1910. Whereas, It has pleased the Great God of Heaven to call Brother Robert Mathes Lyle from labor on earth to rest in immortality in the Grand Lodge above, where the Supreme Grand Master Himself presides; therefore,

Resolved, That we acknowledge the wisdom and goodness of our Grand Master, and bow in humble submission to the inevitable edict from the Supreme Grand East; yet we mourn the death of our brother, as of one whom we shall never meet at the altar of Masonry until we gain admission into the Celestial Lodge on high, where he has preceded us; and we deplore his loss to the fraternity, to his family and friends, and the community in which he lived, he was a just and upright Mason, a consistent and devoted member of the Baptist church, an honorable and useful citizen, a sincere friend, a courteous and obliging neighbor, a man who endeavored always to perform every duty, to his God, his country, his family, his lodge, his neighbor and himself, faithfully and well.

Brother Lyle was born in the State of Georgia on July 11, 1856, and was married to Ida Christian, January 19, 1879, and departed this life on August 11, 1909—ripened with age and experience. He was worthy and well qualified, and duly and truly prepared for admission into that Celestial Lodge above, and he will be properly vouched for by his Lord and Master, whom he loved and served on earth.

We sympathize with his widow and children, and his friends and neighbors who mourn his departure. Resting after a long spent life here, he cannot and would not, if he could return to us; we can if we will go to him. Let us live and perform our duties here as to ensure a joyful reunion with those who have gone before, and a happy life in the great hereafter.

Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Lodge, and that a copy of the same be sent to his widow, and they be published in the New Era, a newspaper published in Winston County, Alabama. S. McCollum, W.D. Shadix, Z. McVay, Committee.

[Robert M. Lyle, 11 Jul 1856 – 11 Aug 1909, Ashridge Methodist Church Cemetery]
